Deborah James 'blown away' over Damehood as she aims to raise £5m to fight cancer by weekend

A friend of the inspirational Deborah James has said the podcast host and campaigner is 'blown away' after being awarded a Damehood.

It was announced on Thursday evening (May 12) that the Queen would honour Deborah outside of the usual schedule. The 40-year-old, who disclosed the heartbreaking news this week that she has moved to hospice-at-home care to treat her terminal bowel cancer, has raised an incredible £4 million after setting up a Just Giving page to raise money for clinical trials, research, and raising awareness of bowel cancer.

Deborah, a former headteacher, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 and has kept her more than 500,000 Instagram followers up to date with her treatments as well as supporting various campaigns, including ITV Lorraine's No Butts, and hosting You, Me, and the Big C. READ MORE: Peter Andre issues emotional message and apologises to wife and children after chipolata 'manhood' comments On Thursday night, Number 10 confirmed that James is to be made a dame, saying: “The Queen has been pleased to approve that the honour of damehood be conferred upon Deborah James.” It comes days after she set up the Bowelbabe Fund after telling fans in an Instagram post that she did not know how long she had left, and that while the last six months had been “heartbreaking” to go through, she had been surrounded by “so much love” and had “no regrets”.

Speaking about her decision to set up the Bowelbabe fund, James wrote: “I always knew there was one thing I always wanted to do before I died.
