Dalbeattie Star came out on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller with Nithsdale Wanderers on Saturday as they suffered their first defeat of the season.
Star raced into a 3-0 lead at Lorimer Park only to lose 4-3 thanks to a Sean Mckenzie-inspired comeback. Cammy Shaw scored for Star in the first minute, Ross Hunter getting the second with a fine lob with less than 10 minutes played.
And when Hunter tucked away the third inside 20 minutes that should have been that. However, Mckenzie soon started the fightback with a free-kick and he reduced the deficit further with a free-kick 10 minutes before the break.
Star had a chance to restore some of their lead early in the second half only for Shaw’s penalty to be saved. Mckenzie then completed his hat-trick to drag Nithsdale level before bagging the winner moments later to complete a remarkable fightback, the dismissal of Aiden Lang not enough to deny them the points Star boss Eddie Warwick said: “We started the game well and we didn’t follow it through. “We weren’t consistent throughout the match. “All the best to Nithsdale for the rest of the season.” Star’s focus changes this weekend to the SFA South Region Challenge Cup.
