Police suspect that a father-of-two was run over and killed by a man known to him after a prank went horrifically wrong. Expat Alan Callaghan had returned home from the US for a holiday with his family - but tragically died after he was struck by a car.
Detectives in his native Ireland are treating the Monday incident on Achill Island, Co Mayo, as a freak accident. Sources told the Irish Mirror that the 46-year-old was struck by the vehicle after he either deliberately lay down in the road or stepped out in front of the car without warning.
Officers are understood to be satisfied that the innocent driver of the car, who is known to Alan, did not see him - and immediately stopped when he realised what had happened.
Earlier in the night Alan had left a social gathering and went out walking before the man known to him decided to go and look for him in a car.
