The incident took place on Tuesday but officers would not confirm if it was a targeted attack. The route between Linwood and Bridge of Weir was blocked off to the public all day as officers carried out their investigation, with the path cordoned off between Sandholes Road and the Brookfield Village Park entrance.

Officers were stationed at the entrances to the path yesterday, but police have yet to confirm whether they will be upping patrols in the area as a result of the attack.
