Cricketers could be forced to change the habit of a lifetime if authorities ban the use of saliva on the ball in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Fast bowlers, in particular, have long used saliva and sweat as means to help polish and shine the ball in order to aid swing movement through the air.
But with the virus being transmitted through invisible droplets that could be found on any surface that the ball comes into contact with, the transference of saliva to the ball using fingers could represent a risk to players.
And with so many issues to consider before cricket can resume, it is another example of how the game may need to change whenever it starts up again.
