Crash victim left paralysed by speeding pal backs new campaign

A Scots woman left paralysed after a horror crash when she was just 16 has backed a new campaign to deter speeding. Laura Torrance was rushed to hospital, suffering from a broken back and internal injuries, after going for a drive with five pals after school in East Kilbride.It's thought the driver took a corner at speeds of 40mph but lost control of the vehicle as it flipped and threw Laura out of the car.

Two of the teens walked away from the incident and another pair suffered minor injuries, but Laura faced six months in the spinal unit at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.The driver of the car eventually moved to England because he could not cope with what happened, and Laura's parents have still never forgiven him.

Speaking to the Record she explained how it has taken her a long time to get over what had happened that day in 1999 and wants other people to learn from her story.

Laura, now 41, said: "The driver had just passed his test by a matter of days and I had been warned not to get into his car but I was young and fearless.
