A couple who ran off without paying the bill in a restaurant have claimed they had a good reason for doing so after facing criticism online.Ruby McGrath, 32, and Suzy Hopley, 33, had a meal with their two kids at the Smithy Arms, in Swinton, North Yorkshire but left without paying the £56 bill.
Landlady Lisa McMaster shared CCTV footage of the couple leaving without payment on social media, according to the Mirror. She wrote on Facebook: "How nice of you to come for a meal and drinks and run without paying.
Staying on a campsite near." After being criticised online, Ruby defended their actions and explained why they left without a word to bar staff.
The Sun reports that in a now-deleted Instagram post, she wrote: "Usually I'd ignore ridiculous online hate, but this also involves my children. "I'm just popping on to say that last night we had a delicious meal and experienced brilliant service at The Smithy Arms in Swinton, but sadly our visit was cut short and we had to dash - poor Frank didn't even get to have his ice cream - due to a personal emergency."Our plan was to call the pub asap to let them know the situation and then hurry back to sort the bill.
