A shocked couple returned home to find a note telling them that an energy company had changed their locks and installed a meter inside their house - despite them never having been customers.
Rachael Holgate, who lives in east Hull with her partner, said she felt 'sick' when she realised that someone had broken into their house without permission, Hull Live reports.
She said they were left locked out for four hours and are now 'stuck' with a pre-paid meter with no account and no idea how to top it up.
She added that she spent 'hours' on phone trying to solve the problem which is believed to have stemmed from a case of 'erroneous transfer', where an energy company takes over the wrong account.
