The number of coronavirus cases in the North of England is almost six times that of the South, according to new data from a symptom tracking app.

New figures from the Covid Symptom Study reveal a huge gap between northern and southern England, suggesting the second wave still hasn't hit the South.

At 5,425, the North East and Yorkshire region has the highest daily average of new Covid-19 cases, nearly six times that of the South East (914), which had the lowest average in the two weeks up to October 4.

The unofficial data also suggests there are 21,903 daily new symptomatic cases of coronavirus in the UK, and critical R values have dropped for the second week in a row.
