Coronation Street went abroad for the very first time in 1974 - but it was far from a holiday for the cast. Strong women have ruled the roost in Weatherfield since the soap first aired in December 1960, so it seemed only fitting that a group of female characters would head off for a girls trip.
Hilda Ogden, Emily Bishop, Rita Sullivan, Mavis Riley, Deidre Barlow, Annie Walker and Betty Turpin flew out to Spain with Bet Lynch after she won a competition.
This meant that cast members Jean Alexander, Eileen Derbyshire, Barbara Knox, Thelma Barlow, Anne Kirkbride, Doris Speed and Julie Goodyear could do something that was impossible on the cobbles - strip off into their swimwear and film on the beach.
