Chris Gascogne, who plays Peter Barlow in Coronation Street, has quit the show after 23 years in the role. The soap star is set to leave the cobbles later this year, with a source telling The Sun: "He loves working at Coronation Street but he's got a lot of things he wants to do and the time is right for him to take a break and pursue other roles. "It isn't a final goodbye and the door is very much being left open, they added, sharing that there is no date set for Chris's return.
It's not the first time that Chris has left the soap since being cast as Peter in 2000, as he quit in 2003, returning in 2007 and left again in 2014.
Following the death of former co-star Anne Kirkbride, he returned a year later and said: "Coming back was like a healing process, we laughed a lot".This means that it is no surprise that the source also confirmed the door is 'still open' for another return - adding that it won't be a 'final goodbye'.
He's had his fair share of explosive storylines while portraying Peter, including a battle with alcoholism, infidelity, and a custody battle with his son Simon - played by Alex Bain currently.
