Just 24 hours after Paul Foreman and Billy Mayhew tied the knot in a poignant ceremony, trouble appeared to be on the horizon for the loved up couple when their marriage was rumbled by Weatherfield’s Bishop Greg Townsend.
As regular viewers of Coronation Street will know, Billy is employed as an Archdeacon by the Church of England and having been keen to have his marriage vows uttered in the eyes of god, he broke the church rules and snuck in with Paul to say ‘I do.’ The intimate moment was captured only by the couples closest loved ones, including daughter Summer Spellman who documented the special occasion with a series of polaroids, however one of them was sadly dropped and discovered by the church warden - who promptly brought the matter to the attention of the Bishop.
Summoning Billy for an urgent meeting, the Bishop soon laid out the grievance against Billy, but in heartwarming scenes he agreed to turn a blind eye to the situation in light of Paul’s terminal diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease.
However in an unfortunate twist, it soon emerged that the church warden had shared the photo online, prompting public outrage from many members of the congregation and immediately placing Billy’s future with the church in jeopardy, despite the Bishop’s initially lenient stance.
