Council chiefs have launched an investigation following the surprise closure of a famous town centre lane in Irvine.Access to the 'stepping stone' path that links Bank Street to the East Road car park has been blocked off by locked gates at either end.But North Ayrshire Council yesterday insisted it has nothing to do with them. Now they've launched a probe to get to the bottom of the mystery. The lane has been a popular short cut for members of the public for decades and was renowned for it's makeshift step – a boulder that gave a leg up over a small wall into the car park.It is not clear if the lane is a public right of way.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news
