North Yorkshire Police confirmed that the pond at Sand Hutton Gravel Pits had been emptied as part of searches at the site, which they said may last a number of days.

Ms Lawrence, who was 35 at the time of her disappearance and lived in the Heworth area of York, was last seen on March 18 in 2009.

She was reported missing after she failed to arrive for a shift at York University, where she worked as a chef. Detectives believe she was murdered, although no body has ever been found.
