Chilling deepfake video of Tom Cruise goes viral

Tom Cruise has found himself at the centre of a growing craze on the internet to make him the star of a series of disturbingly realistic deepfake videos.

One of the most popular videos doing the rounds is a clip posted on YouTube of Cruise starting out as Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader in conversation with David Letterman on his late-night show in 2008.

Creepily it shows Hader doing an impression of Tom Cruise – as his face subtly shifts into Cruise’s. The mind-melding video has been viewed nearly 3m times since being uploaded to the YouTube channel Ctrl Shift Face a week ago.
