Chelsea put their recent defeats behind them as Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham both scored to see off the Hammers. The Blues had threatened to fall away following losses at Everton and then Wolves.
Frank Lampard's side certainly had the look of a side who had been dealt a reality check and West Ham will feel aggrieved by the end scoreline.
They posed the Blues plenty of problems but were on the back foot within 10 minutes as Thiago Silva was allowed a clear run to head home.
West Ham though continued to come as the error-strewn hosts failed to assert their authority on the game. But Tammy Abraham scored two in the space of three minutes to take the game away from the visitors and ensure that an indifferent performance was not punsihed.
