Olivier Giroud's fine header was cancelled out by Anwar El Ghazi's second-half equaliser as a heavily-rotated Chelsea side were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa.
Giroud met Ben Chilwell's cross at the near post to nod beyond Emiliano Martinez in the 34rd minute, after an evenly-matched first half-hour in west London.
Chelsea were punished for a slow start to the second half as El Ghazi was unmarked at the back post to fire in the equaliser in the 50th minute.
The game grew increasingly frantic as it wore on, with Christian Pulisic and John McGinn going close before Chilwell almost grabbed all three points for the hosts with an added-time volley.
