SUNDAY AM: Football, Christmas shopping, nor Turkey could divert attention away from cinemas this past weekend as Disney’s Moana 2 came in with the best overall 5-day and Thanksgiving record (opening and holdover) ever with $221M. On a 3-day basis, with $135.5M, it’s the best ever opening for a Walt Disney Animation title surpassing Frozen 2‘s $130.3M opening.
As we told you all weekend long, that Friday-Sunday is the second-best opening ever for Dwyane Johnson after Furious 7‘s $147.1M.
All in, the global start was $386.3M, which is the second-best worldwide debut YTD after Deadpool & Wolverine ($444.7M).
On a sheer global opening basis ($135.5M+$165.3M=$300.8M), Moana 2 ranks after Super Mario Bros Movie ($377.2M) and Frozen 2‘s $358.2M. “‘Moana 2’ has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that ‘Moana’ has become,” said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman in a statement. “We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music.
