Celtic star hails Hoops icon with 'small token of gratitude' at event launch

Celtic captain Callum McGregor says it's only right he shows his respect to Billy McNeil as he backed a new charity event named in the Mossend man's honour.McNeill passed away in April 2019 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease approximately nine years earlier.

He was 79.The Billy McNeill Fund was launched that year in tribute to the former Parkhead captain, who hailed from Mossend, Bellshill.A legend of Scottish sport, the former defender has a strong connection to the game in Lanarkshire, having turned out for West of Scotland Football League club Blantyre Victoria and Motherwell's Our Lady's High School.McGregor linked up with former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie for the launch of a celebrity golf day that will raise funds for respite for ex-footballers affected by dementia.McNeill’s nine titles, seven Scottish Cups, six League Cups and the historic European Cup trophy from 1967 has him stand out from most legends in Glasgow's east-end.McGregor said: “I don’t have anyone in the family who has suffered from dementia, but with Billy being such an iconic figure for the club I felt it was important to back it and show our support as a club.“After everything Billy did for us, this is just a small token of our gratitude.”Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onTwitter via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the latest sports news, pictures and video.
