There has been much talk about who has been honoured this year in The Queen's Birthday Honours. The honours are titles bestowed by The Queen on deserving people from all walks of life, in “public recognition of their merit, service or bravery”.
However, despite the honour, there have been recipients who have snubbed the honour or handed them back. In 2001, chef Nigella Lawson was offered an OBE, however she turned it down.
Nigella said: “I’m not saving lives and I’m not doing anything other than something I absolutely love.” While grime artist Skepta turned down an MBE in the 2017 New Year’s Honours list, which he announced in a unique way.
Rapping in his song Hypocrisy, he said: “Just came back from the Ivors/ And look at what we collected/ The MBE got rejected/I'm not trying to be accepted.” Actor Michael Sheen didn’t reject the MBE he got in 2009, but instead handed it back. The actor was given the title in the 2009 New Year's Honours for his services to drama, but has told how he gave it back a few years after as he did not want to be a "hypocrite".
