A car has burst into flames on a major road in Ayrshire this afternoon sparking an emergency response. The alarm was raised at around 2.30pm when mercy crews, including Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, were alerted to reports of a vehicle blaze on the A70 between Cumnock and Ochiltree.

A video taken at the scene, which was shared on social media, shows plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the air as bright orange flames spit from the wreckage, and engulf the entire body of the motor.Concerned drivers, who appear to have ground to a halt upon approach, stand dangerously close to the raging inferno, while queues of traffic can be seen building on the horizon. It is understood firefighters scrambled to the site to tackle the blaze while cops dealt with the congestion and delays which occurred as a result. The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known, but cops have confirmed that the burnt out car has been recovered, and the road has now reopened.

It remains unclear whether anyone was hurt or hospitalised.A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to reports of a vehicle on fire on A70 near to Ochiltree around 2.30pm on Monday, September 12."Emergency services attended and officers assisted with traffic management.

The vehicle has been recovered and the road's now clear." Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
