Cambuslang Rangers titles and games at Ibrox and Hampden were highlights, says star

John Gemmell is proud to have won three promotions with Cambuslang Rangers, but says career highlights came in big games at huge venues.The 38-year-old striker played twice at Ibrox and once at Hampden with Clyde, and bagged a winner against Kilmarnock for Stenhousemuir.Gemmell announced his retirement from the game last week, as injury forced a premature end to his career with one final senior season at Dumbarton, who signed off their League Two campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Stranraer, before heading into a play-off semi-final against Annan Athletic.“I always wanted to play at Ibrox, so that was great,” said Gemmell, “and scoring the winner against Kilmarnock for Stenhousemuir was probably my game highlight.“I played at Ibrox twice, once with Partick Thistle in the Premier League in 2003 and 10 years later with Stenhousemuir on Armed Forces Day, when we got beat 8-0!“My family was there in 2003, so it was great.“At Clyde we got to the play-off final, where Queen’s Park beat us [3-2 aggregate win in 2016].

That was a great group of boys and we should have won promotion with that squad.“But my last game for Clyde was at Hampden, so I’ve been lucky to play for good part-time teams, and on good occasions.“Hopefully Dumbarton can still get to the play-off final in the next couple of weeks.“Winning promotion via the play-offs is just as good as winning the league outright, so I might still get a couple of nights’ bender in Magaluf out of this, after all!”Gemmell was with Cambuslang Rangers last season when they won the West of Scotland League Conference B title, earning them promotion to the Premier League, but parted ways with them before landing at Dumbarton.He said: “Managing to come back this season was a real
