Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council honour top local heroes

Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council honoured the great and the good from the area with their annual sports awards and dinner in Rutherglen Town Hall earlier this month.The event, held for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, attracted a full house, including Provost Margaret Cooper, elected Parliamentary and council representatives, and guests from ClubSport Scotland and other South Lanarkshire Sports Councils.Councillor Robert Brown, chair of the sports council, said: “The last year or so has seen the restart or the ramping up of many sporting and athletic activities after the pandemic.“It had been a challenging time for many clubs, but often with a growth in demand for sporting opportunities, too.“Cambuslang and Rutherglen is becoming a centre of excellence in many sports, including tennis, rugby, Gaelic sports, gymnastics, boxing, cycling and running – to say nothing of the achievements of Rutherglen Glencairn in reaching the Scottish Junior Cup final.”Amongst the awards presented was the Brian Logue Award, in memory of the former Rutherglen Reformer photographer, which this year went to Billy Hepburn of Fernhill Soccer School.The results were:Female of the Year: Abbie Fountain (wrestling)Junior Female of the Year: Sophia Martin (Glasgow City).Junior Team: Cambuslang and Stonelaw U14 Rugby Club (Cambuslang Rugby Club).Sporting Primary of the Year: Burgh Primary.Sporting High School of the Year: Stonelaw High.Challenge of the Year: Kai Hunter (Scottish Disability Swimming Club)Coach of the Year: Craig Burnett (Cambuslang Rugby Club)Young Volunteer of the Year: Kirsty Baird (South Lanarkshire Active Schools team)Brian Logue Award: Billy Hepburn.ClubSport/Services to Sport Award: Kevin Anderson
