The story of an ordinary family caught up in extraordinary circumstances, The Way, follows the fortunes of the Driscoll family who have to flee their hometown due to a civil uprising. The Welsh star-studded cast of this new BBC drama includes Gavin & Stacey actor Steffan Rhodri, who plays the dad of the family, Geoff Driscoll.
Steffan took the role after hearing about it from Michael Sheen, one of the show’s creators, who Steffan has been friends with for decades. “I’ve known Michael since I was 16.
We were in the same youth theatre,” says Steffan, 56. “We’ve got similar backgrounds and passions, so as soon as I read this, I thought, ‘I have to be a part of it.’ It was fantastic to work with Michael for the first time.” Also starring in the three-part drama is Callum Scott Howells (Owen Driscoll), who rose to fame in Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin. “It’s been three years since It’s A Sin came out and looking back is crazy because I feel like such a different person,” reveals Callum. “Owen’s a lot more spunky than Colin [his character in It’s A Sin], a lot more badass.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be forever grateful for Colin, but I’m excited to show people that I can do more.” Based in the Welsh town of Port Talbot, The Way sees the Driscolls caught up in riots when the local steelworks plant is under threat.
