Here’s some devilish gossip that would cause a stir at Nonnatus House. Call the Midwife star Miriam Margolyes has revealed how Warren Beatty once asked her: “Do you f***?”.

The actress, 80, who plays Mother Superior in the BBC drama, tells of the Hollywood lover’s upfront method of flirting in her memoir This Much Is True, out in September.

Beatty delivered the line while Margolyes, who is a lesbian, was auditioning for the 1981 film Reds when he was in his early forties and she was four years younger.

She said of writing the book: “I’m almost a virgin where writing is concerned but losing that virginity has been delicious. “The past rears up; it both delights and frightens me.
