A dad-of-one who noticed a small 'bruise' on his ankle that "wouldn't go away" was left devastated when it led to a shocking double cancer diagnosis.

John Haywood first spotted the mark on his skin when it was about the size of a 50p coin last summer, but thought "nothing of it" and passed it off as the result of an accidental bump or scrape.

The Greater Manchester Police chief inspector assumed it would go away in time and mentioned the 'bruise' in passing to his dermatologist, who arrange for it to be checked out.

Tests revealed the 'innocuous' mark that had appeared on the 46-year-old's leg was actually the first visible sign something was seriously wrong.
