Due to an unexpected spike in demand, the maximum time for processing a British passport application has more than tripled. HM Passport Office is now telling travellers to allow up to 10 weeks to receive the vital document, which is up from three weeks previously.
In 2020, just four million people applied for a passport amid the collapse in overseas travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.
