Brits spend £5bn buying tech to keep in touch with older family members during pandemic

£5.4 billion spending on tech for over-60s and boosted their mental health as families ensure they stay in touch, reveals new research from Capital One UK.

Around 16.9 million UK adults have bought a new device or given a second-hand one to someone aged 60-plus since March last year, the research found.

Average spending per gadget was £253 with those aged 35 to 44 splurging out the most - on average at £313. The most popular devices being bought for the over-60s are mobile phones (11%) narrowly ahead of tablets (10%) and laptops and computers bought by 9%, while 5 per cent have bought e-readers or smart home devices such as an Alexa.
