The great British summer holiday is back on as bookings for staycations have soared by up to 150% year-on-year. Campsites revealed they have been inundated with tens of thousands hoping to bag a spot and website Pitchup.co said it had taken more than 30,000 bookings - amounting to 120,000 guests - since Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave them the green light.

Founder Dan Yates said as soon as the sites reopened at the weekend, staff were taking calls at the rate on one every three seconds at the peak of enquiries.

Sites have missed out on three and a half months of crucial business and are hoping an Indian summer will help get the sector back on its feet taking the season beyond August Bank Holiday and into October half term.
