British Airways has been hit by a “technical issue” as frustrated customers around the world complained of delays. A reported IT glitch has left pilots unable to file flight plans electronically, and having to manually call into the operations centre at Heathrow Airport.

Pilots were unable to file "load sheets" which are essential to aircraft safety because they calculate the weight and distribution of cargo, fuel and passengers.

Passengers began reporting problems at about 5pm this evening (Monday). Some claimed they were still waiting to take off while awaiting clearance, the Mirror reports.

According to reports, queues were building at Heathrow Terminal 5 while flights to Aberdeen, Newcastle and Edinburgh were running an hour or more late. READ MORE: Extraordinary scenes as row erupts on quiet suburban street over dog's welfare Arrivals from Europe were delayed by an hour or more.
