Nicola Coughlan, who plays the role of Penelope Featherington on Netflix’s new hit series Bridgerton, is speaking out in response to people who have criticized the show’s diverse casting.
The show is set in 1813 during the regency era in London and features people of all races. An explanation is given in the show that when the king fell in love with a Black woman and married her, it gave other people of color the ability to achieve status and ranking in society.
