The young son of the New York Yankees baseball superstar may have passed away due to carbon monoxide poisoning while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica.

Local authorities announced Monday (March 31) that investigators detected “high levels of carbon monoxide contamination” in the family’s hotel room at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, via the New York Post. The investigation remains ongoing, and the toxicology results are still pending. While it was originally speculated that Brett‘s son experienced an allergic reaction to food poisoning medication or from asphyxiation, those reasons were reportedly ruled out.
