Former Celtic general manager Jock Brown has urged the club's board to back Brendan Rodgers sensibly during the transfer window. The Parkhead club are looking to build on a position of strength after securing a league and cup double and a place in the reformatted Champions League league phase, and the £40million or prize money that comes with it.

Celtic were criticised for their transfer dealings last summer and in January, although Adam Idah's loan from Norwich worked out well and now Rodgers wants to bring him in on a permanent basis. It's a similar story with Portuguese midfielder Paulo Bernardo, although the Hoops are keen to bring down Benfica's £6.3million asking price.

The board have been urged to back Rodgers, who has previously not tried all that hard to hide his frustrations before, during and after previous windows, albeit subtly.

He wants the best tools to allow him to keep delivering trophies, and dramatically improve his European record. But Brown, who was responsible for getting Celtic deals done in the late 90s, has warned that that doesn't mean just loosening the purse strings and giving the manager what he wants.
