Labour have won the Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election.In his acceptance speech, Michael Shanks said “it is truly the honour of my life”.He claimed 17,845 votes in the by-election that was sparked by the removal of Margaret Ferrier following her Covid breaches.The SNP’s Katy Loudon came second in the poll, claiming 8399 votes.Shanks took the seat with a majority of 9446.Thomas Kerr of the Conservatives came third with 1192 votes.Just over one-third of eligible voters went to the polls to cast their ballots in the crunch Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election.The turnout in the Westminster ballot was 37.19 per cent – with a total of 30,351 votes cast by the electorate of 82,104 people. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
