Boris Johnson has refused to extend free schools meals over the Christmas break - but pledged that no child would go hungry over the winter break.

It comes after Tory MPs queued up to back the PM's call to vote down a Labour bid which would have extended support to struggling parents through the October half-term.

The bid was inspired by Marcus Rashford's campaign to end child hunger. Asked at PMQs by Labour MP Gareth Thomas to commit to extending the meals at over the festive break, Mr Johnson did not answer.

The Harrow West MP asked Mr Johnson: "I hope the Prime Minister and the Chancellor now regret their decisions not to extend free school meals to cover half term and will join the richly deserved praise for all those councils,
