Bolton Wanderers legend Roy Greaves dies aged 77

Bolton Wanderers legend Roy Greaves has died at the age of 77. In a statement issued by the club on Monday (August 12), they confirmed the former midfielder had passed away.

Greaves, from Farnworth, made 575 appearances between 1965 and 1980 and was regarded as one of the most versatile players to have represented the club.

He is second on the list of all-time appearance-makers for Wanderers, behind Eddie Hopkinson. He started out as a forward for the Whites before becoming a central midfield player who helped them win the Third Division title in 1973 and the Second Division championship some five years later. "Roy was the club's second-highest appearance maker and will be sorely missed by all at Wanderers.

Our condolences are with Roy's family and friends at this difficult time." Greaves went on to spend two seasons in the States to play for Seattle Sounders in the North American Soccer League before returning back to the UK as a player and coach at Rochdale, before settling back in Farnworth. "At one point owning a bar with friend and former team-mate Allardyce, Greaves remained a well-known and popular figure around Bolton and regularly watched the Whites despite suffering from ill health in recent years," the club said in a statement.
