Just a couple of months ago Billy Gilmour was watching Scotland scalp Spain from the sidelines at Hampden. Unsure of his club future and frozen out of the national side too.
In that moment of national glory, it did feel as if the career path of the country’s prodigal son might suddenly have lost all sense of direction.
As the clock ticked down on a famous win, Gilmour was reduced to performing star jumps in front of Steve Clarke’s bench in the hope of reminding the manager that he was still part of his group.
But last week he wasn’t watching Spain any more. He was training there, as part of Scotland’s preparations for the next humongous qualifier against Norway.
