Beyonce has removed an interpolation of Kelis’s song Milkshake from her new song Energy after facing backlash from the singer. The star had come under fire after releasing her new album Renaissance, which featured an interpolation of Kelis’s 2003 hit song, which Kelis claims came as a surprise to her.Interpolation in music refers to using either parts or the whole melody of a previously recorded song, but re-recording the melody rather than sampling the original.

Bey has since removed the segment from Energy on Tidal and Apple after Kelis called out her and The Neptunes for allegedly failing to seek permission for its use.Milkshake was written by The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, and while Kelis was the singer, only the production duo are credited as songwriters. After the release of Beyonce’s new album, Kelis took to social media to call out the use of her music, claiming she had been unaware it was going to be on Energy. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 videoResponding to a fan who commented that Beyoncé and Kelis is ‘a collab the world really needs,’ she said: ‘It’s not a collab it’s theft.’Kelis went on: ‘My mind is blown too because the level and disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding.‘I heard about this the same way everyone else did.
