Betting giant William Hill is to permanently close 119 stores over fears customer numbers will never return to pre-pandemic levels.

The company, which has 1,559 UK outlets, said it will protect the "majority" of jobs, with staff redeployed to other branches as a result of the restructing.

The news came as it posted profits of £141million for the first six months of 2020, compared with a loss of £63million last year.

The company has identified all of the 119 stores that are slated for closure, chief executive Ulrik Bengtsson said in a call with reporters.
