A 10th Test ton was the perfect way to give Joe Root his full support following a week as stand-in skipper that ended in defeat.
And with Dominic Sibley collecting his second triple figure score, the England camp enjoyed a much more serene and positive day than the previous one.
It meant Root was able to declare on 469-9 thanks to Stokes' 176 and Sibley's 120, with his bowlers free to tear in with abandon for just under an hour, with Sam Curran making the one breakthrough as the Windies finished day two 32-1.
