BBC TV licence fee increases again with rise coming in April

The annual TV licence fee will increase by £1.50 from April 1, it has been announced. The increase means the full cost of a year's license will rise from £157.50 to £159 There was a bigger increase last year, when the cost went up from £154.50.

The Government is responsible for setting the level of the licence fee and announced in 2016 it would rise in line with inflation for five years from 1 April 2017.

The fee, which pays for the tens of thousands of hours of local and national BBC broadcasting as well as online services, has become a particular point of contention in recent years.

In 2020 it will announced that over-75s would have to stump up for the licence from August that year. A Sunday Mirror investigation found that 750,000 OAPS
