One Strictly Come Dancing star has been given a major boost as they emerged as a 'new favourite' ahead of the first elimination of the series.

There's not long to go until all 15 couples perform once again in this year's run of the BBC One dance contest. Last Saturday night (September 21), the new pairings made their ballroom debuts with JLS star JB Gill and his dance partner Amy Dowden hitting the top spot as they were awarded 31 points from the judges for their waltz to When I Need You by singer Leo Sayer.

Meanwhile, Tasha Ghouri and Aljaz Skorjanec and Sarah Hadland and Vito Coppola closely followed the week one leaders in joint-second place with a total of 30 points out of a possible 40 each. The pair performed a cha cha to Beatles hit Twist And Shout which was awarded 23 points from the judges. And they weren't the only ones sitting with 23 points as Jamie Borthwick and Michelle Tsiakkas, Tom Dean and Nadiya Bychkova and Sam Quek and Nikita Kuzmin all found themselves sitting in the middle of the leaderboard.
