It was announced at the start of this month that the hospital drama will come to an end next year after 23 years. The broadcaster said in its announcement that the decision comes with "great sadness" but the move is to make room for new opportunities and a bid to better reflect and serve all parts of the country as part of their commitment to make more programmes across the UK.

But fans were gutted by the news. "No way, surely this isn’t April 1st? My absolute fave TV show. I am beyond gutted to read this.
