After a remarkable run in theaters, Greta Gerwig’s pop culture phenomenon Barbie is making its way to streaming, having set a premiere date on Max of December 15th.
The news comes shortly after the Gotham Awards, where Barbie was honored with a Global Icon & Creator tribute, with Gerwig and star Margot Robbie speaking on behalf of the film.
The highest grossing film in the history of Warner Bros, at a worldwide gross exceeding $1.4 billion, Barbie stars Robbie as the “stereotypical” version of the Mattel doll, who comes to suffer an existential crisis after traveling from Barbie Land into the real world with new beau, Ken (Ryan Gosling).
Gerwig directed from her script written with Noah Baumbach. Pic’s starry ensemble also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emerald Fennell, among others.
