Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has proven to be no laughing matter at the box office with its billion-dollar take. But some 30 or more years ago, it was a different story when a Barbie movie was pitched, says actress Sharon Stone.
Writing a response on America Ferrera‘s social media post of her Critics Choice acceptance speech for her role in Barbie, Stone recalled a different time. “I was laughed out if the studio when i came w the Barbie idea in the 90s w the support of the head of Barbie,” Stone wrote. “How far we’ve come thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.” The attitude exemplified by Stone’s experience wasn’t eradicated for a while.
In subsequent years, an Amy Schumer Barbie vehicle was scrapped, as was one with Anne Hathaway attached. Watch the video embedded below to see how things have progressed.
