The great getaway has begun on what is set to be the busiest August bank holiday Friday on record with 5.6 million people set to take trips within the UK today.

An estimated 18 million drivers will be hitting the road this weekend, according to the RAC, an increase of 1.8million more than last year.

The roads expected to be the busiest include the M5 to and from Devon, the A303 around Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the M1 in and out of London, the M6 northbound towards the Lake District and the A14, which runs in and out of East Anglia.

Tourist hotspots such as Cornwall, Devon and Dorset are bracing for a huge surge of holidaymakers, as the pandemic continues to halt foreign travel.
