Ayr barber cutting hair under his own roof after leaving town centre 40 years on from first trim

One of Ayr’s most popular barbers has told how a shift to home working is keeping him razor sharp.Marco Zonfrillo, who has spent more than 40 years cutting hair in the town centre, is now trading from his own home.

A specially converted outbuilding is welcoming punters as Marco aims to continue his famous family tradition.Of proud Italian descent, Marco grew up working in his dad, Leo’s, shop at the legendary Levano’s.The Lorne Arcade spot, opened by the Alexander Brothers, was besieged by customers and Marco would later open his own shop in the same location.

But with his lease ending, he has taken the bold move to set up from under his own roof and says he’s creating a ‘home away from home’ for clients.He said: “An opportunity came up when my lease was ending and I suppose I could have gone two ways with it.

I’ve always had the space in my house and a couple of people mentioned to me how it would be perfect to convert.“So we did it and got everything sorted with the permissions and here we are now.
