They hooked the ATM up to the rear of the powerful 4x4 with an industrial chain and pulled it clear. The drama happened at a branch of Co-op on Bridge Street in Manchester city centre on Wednesday morning.
It is believed the thieves used an axe to smash the front of the store before attaching a metal chain to a cash machine just inside the entrance.
It has not been revealed how much cash was stolen. The shop, just a few yards from Manchester Crown Court, was cordoned off this morning as police started an investigation.
