Auchencarroch landfill owners pledge to manage odours as site stops receiving waste

The company which operates Alexandria’s Auchencarroch landfill site say it will continue to manage odours - even after it stops receiving waste this month.Barr Environmental runs the site, which hit the headlines last year after a vile smell left residents in nearby Bonhill disgusted.At the time, Jack Fordy of Bonhill and Dalmonach Community Council said: “The smell got worse at the end of last year, often adding the rotting vegetation stench to the cocktail of stench.“On the evening of October 23 after our community council meeting, the smell was so dense outside Dalmonach Leisure Centre that you could taste it.”And last week one concerned resident contacted the Lennox about the continuing issue - outlining fears that further odours may be more difficult to manage with Auchencarroch no longer accepting household waste.He said: “Last year a smell was identified as being due to leachate egressing from the soon to close Auchencarroch landfill.“SEPA, in early December 2023, advised the council that they were aware of the problem and that repairs were underway by the tip operator Barr Environmental Limited to fix the problem.“But now at the start of March 2024 the problem has not been fixed.“With landfill set to end in a few weeks, residents are now asking who is going to make the leaking dump safe.

And what guarantees there are of future stability, if after some four months, the current leak cannot be stopped.“The toxic stench that residents have had to endure these last four months is a health hazard.
