JLS star Aston Merrygold, 34, on starring in the theatre version of 1980s dance film Footloose, why he hasn’t kept any JLS-branded condoms and how he got over the disappointment of being voted off Strictly.I was four when it came out and around 11 when I first saw it.
I loved dancing as a kid and I remember being fascinated. It’s a really clever story – Ren moves to an American Midwest town where they’ve made dancing and rock music illegal.It’s definitely one of my favourite stories and I based the music video for my song Show Me on it.I’m Willard – he’s a lovable comedy part and he gets the one-liners.
He’s ridiculously fun to play. He doesn’t realise he’s the butt of the joke sometimes but he’s like a loyal puppy and very protective of his family and friends.The director said to me, ‘Your singing is good but can you just be a little bit more out of step with your dancing?’ I have to remember to do everything off time, which goes against everything I’ve spent my whole life doing!
It was difficult at first but it was actually a lot of fun to add the comedic value.We’ve always said the door is open. We did a tour last year and released an album.
